STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION ON THE PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION BILL 2019: THE DIALOGUE AND PSA

The Dialogue and PSA organized a stakeholder consultation on The Personal Data Protection Bill 2019 on January 10, 2020, at the Regency IV and V, The Lalit, New Delhi. The introduction of the EU GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) has initiated a global shift in data privacy laws. In the KS Puttuswamy v. Union of India case, the Supreme Court recognized the fundamental right to information privacy, prompting the Indian Government to establish a committee to discuss data protection. The committee submitted its report a year later, leading to the Government’s release of draft bills, with one sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for deliberation. The event aimed to analyze the Bill and address concerns from stakeholders, fostering a balanced approach between economic growth, privacy, and national security in the new law. Attendees included tech policy experts from organizations like MasterCard, Microsoft, IBM, and the International Association of Privacy Professionals, along with representatives from Members of Parliament offices and the media.
