Dr. Aurelien Portuese

Dr. Aurelien Portuese, a Research Professor and the Founding Director of the GW Competition & Innovation Lab at The George Washington University, also practices law at the DC office of Freshfields and serves as the Special Editor at the Antitrust Law Journal of the American Bar Association.

Previously, Professor Portuese held roles as an adjunct professor at George Mason University, directed antitrust and innovation at a think tank, and served as a professor at various UK and French universities. He also engaged in research as a visiting scholar at the Center for Competition Law and Policy at the University of Oxford.

In 2022, Professor Portuese authored “Algorithmic Antitrust,” and in 2014, he published “The Principle of Economic Efficiency in the European Case-Law.” His substantial contributions to antitrust include articles in journals such as the Stanford Journal of Law, Business & Finance, George Mason Law Review, Columbia Journal of European Law, Journal of Economic Affairs, European Journal of Law & Economics, Journal of Law, Economics & Policy, Manchester Journal of International Economic Law, European Law Journal, Concurrences, and Competition Policy International. Additionally, he crafted op-eds, shorter articles, and public comments for regulatory authorities.

Acknowledged for his outstanding work, Professor Portuese received nominations for the 2022 Antitrust Writing Award for “Precautionary Antitrust” and the 2019 Antitrust Writing Award for “Antitrust Populism.” Currently, he serves as the Editor of the Special Symposium “Beyond Dynamic Competition” in the ABA’s Antitrust Law Journal, set for publication in 2024. Furthermore, he contributes as a member of the intergovernmental group of experts on Competition Law and Policy for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). 

In his advisory role at The Dialogue, he will center his efforts on delivering specialized expertise and guidance, with a particular emphasis on matters related to competition law and policy.
