Prof. Aditya Bhattacharjea, formerly Senior Professor of Economics at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, has made significant contributions to academia over several decades. He taught postgraduate courses in international trade, industrial organization, and Indian economic development. Throughout his tenure, he held esteemed positions, including heading the Economics Department from 2014 to 2018 and serving as Executive Director of the Centre for Development Economics from 2020 to 2022. Before his tenure at the Delhi School of Economics, Prof. Bhattacharjea taught at St Stephen’s College, Delhi, from 1980 to 1996, and served as a visiting associate professor at Duke University, USA.
Currently, he holds the esteemed position of Non-resident Honorary Distinguished Fellow at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai. Prof. Bhattacharjea’s research interests are diverse, encompassing competition (antitrust) law, labor market regulation, trade policy under imperfect competition, and economics policy. His scholarly contributions have been recognized by numerous publications in prestigious law and economics journals in India and abroad.
Beyond academia, Prof. Bhattacharjea has actively engaged with government initiatives, lending his expertise to various committees and groups. He served on the Expert Group on Trade and Competition Policy under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India (2002-03), the Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of India (2012-2015), and the Standing Committee on Industrial Statistics of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (2012-2018). He also played a pivotal role as a resource person for sessions on Competition Policy and Government Procurement at the annual WTO Regional Trade Policy Courses for the Asia/Pacific region (2005-2010). Recently, he served on two significant committees established by India’s Ministry of Corporate Affairs: the Competition Law Review Committee (2018-19) and the Committee on Digital Competition Law (2023-24).
Prof. Bhattacharjea’s association with The Dialogue will be in the capacity of Visiting Senior Fellow, where he will be dedicated to delivering specialized knowledge, particularly in the domains of competition law and policy.
